What is Host Town

The Host Town Initiative aims to connect Japanese local towns with countries and regions taking part in the Tokyo Games which have been postponed to year 2021, and to have various exchanges in terms of sports, culture, economy, etc. Through their respective Host Towns, participating countries and regions can develop long-term relationship with Japanese local towns.

The project uses the song, “Beneath the Same Sky.”

The song was provided by Mr. Enokida Ryuji, who is the member of the Economy and Technology
Commission for the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Mr. Enokida is the producer of this project.

He made this song when he was staying in Kenya.
Endless sky and horizon lies in the path south from Nairobi to a town called Kibwezi.
He came up with the song when he realized that the sky is covering the whole world.

The students from Haramachi Dai-Ni Junior High School in Minamisoma City,
Fukushima Prefecture partially modified the lyrics and sang this song as part of this project.
Minamisoma City, which was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake (in 2011),
is registered as ‘Arigato’ Host Towns for Supporting Reconstruction, partnering with Djibouti,
Taiwan, United States and Korea. They will invite and interact with the people of these countries and regions at Tokyo Games in year 2021.
They also plan to cheer for the athletes of their partner countries and regions.
